Discussion Questions:
1. Who do you think is a good candidate for a hip resurfacing vs. a traditional total hip replacement?
2. Why do you think hip resurfacing is a better option for some patients?
3. Do you know anyone personally who has had either total hip/knee replacement or hip resurfacing surgery?
4. What do you think makes a good surgeon? How would you go about choosing a surgeon to do an preplanned (versus emergency) surgery?
5. What classes or courses in high school might prepare you to go into the medical field? What fields of study might a surgeon choose while in college?

Standards Explained:
Students will describe the structure and function of cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems. Explain the purpose of the major organ systems in the human body (i.e., digestion, respiration, reproduction, circulation, excretion, movement, control, and coordination, and for protection from disease).

For discussion questions, none. Students could answer questions as a sponge, a writing assignment, or as a small-group or whole group class discussion.
