    I’ve had my 9th grade science class try building a rube goldberg. The instructions are to videotape the a) starting materials, b) building process, and c) final product. On the deadline, we watch the video’s and discuss concepts like leverage, momentum, tension, and pressure for specific parts.

    We also do building activities with simple machines like pulley’s, levers, and inclined planes w/ friction. I’m hoping to extend this activity to gear systems. The students are assessed on their ability to calculate the mechanical advantage and predict the equilibrium values (mass) to balance the machine (net force is zero).
