Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery Game Info

Recommended Grade Levels:  7-12 (ages 13-15)

 

Run Time:  30-40 minutes

 

Story Line:  A patient has a movement disorder, Parkinson's Disease, and can no longer control her movements with medication.  The patient visits a neurologist who assesses the severity of the movement disorder.  Then the neurologist recommend surgery and the patient visits Dr. Vanessa Mei for the next three steps of the five step process.  Dr. Mei inserts the fiducials in the skull. Fiducials are screw-like, non-moving guides that the GPS locating system uses to help guide the surgeon to the correct locations in the brain.  Several days after the fiducials are in, Dr. Mei begins surgery to insert an electrode in the patient's brain to control unwanted movement.  The third step of the process has Dr. Mei inserting the battery packs for the electronic pulse device near the patient's collarbones.  Finally, the patient returns to the neurologist who activates and calibrates the pulse system to best benefit the patient.
