Join Dr. Vanessa Mei as she treats a patient with Distonia, a movement disorder that makes everyday tasks like eating, self-care, and even walking a challenge. Follow the patient’s journey from diagnosis with the neurologist, through surgical assessment, and finally to meeting the surgeon for testing.
The surgery begins days before the operating room, when fiducials (tiny screws) are placed in the skull to guide the GPS-like equipment that pinpoints exactly where in the brain to insert the electrical probe. Assist Dr. Mei with pre-op steps like shaving the head, cleaning the surgical area, and implanting the towers that ensure ultra-precise placement of the probe.
Next, listen to the brain itself to locate the perfect spot for the probe, then help test the patient—who stays awake during surgery—by having them write their name, lift a cup, pretend to drink, and repeat lines. These checks confirm that the probe is working correctly without affecting other brain areas. Once the right side of the brain is controlling the left side of the body, the procedure is repeated on the left side to balance both sides.
Finally, close the skull and scalp, and two weeks later, assist with inserting the wires and battery pack that will power the brain stimulation electronics.
